Climate leaders adopt the Kyoto Declaration for Cultivating a Culture of Sustainable Cities

On 10 December, cities, regions, national government, businesses, and civil society gathered in Kyoto, Japan at the Kyoto Conference on the Global Environment 2017 (KYOTO+20) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the birth of the Kyoto Protocol, resulting in the adoption of the Kyoto Declaration for Cultivating a Culture of Sustainable Cities.

The Kyoto Declaration recognizes that cities play an important role in leading the way to achieve carbon neutrality in the second half of this century, namely the goals of the Paris Agreement. The Declaration lays out a vision for cities leading up to 2050 and encourages cities around the world to join Kyoto in cultivating a culture of sustainable cities that is in balance with the local and global environment.

“Cities are directly involved in the lives of its citizens and therefore have the vital role of leading the way in the fight against global warming” said Daisaku Kadokawa, Mayor of Kyoto. He emphasized that strengthening collaboration and sharing of experiences among cities is critical to accelerate global climate action.

Cities from around the world attended the Conference to recognize the significance of the Kyoto Protocol in the history of international climate negotiations. In her opening remarks, Aurélie Solans, Councilor of Paris, expressed her appreciation to Kyoto for paving the way 20 years ago, saying that “the Paris Agreement would not have been possible without your work.”

In addition to Paris, local governments including Suwon, New Taipei, Pittsburgh, Freiburg, Iskandar as well as Japanese ICLEI Members such as Kyoto Prefecture, Aichi Prefecture, Yokohama, Hiroshima, Iida, Nagoya and Sapporo participated in the Conference, showing their support and solidarity.

Approximately 1,000 participants attended KYOTO+20, which was held at Kyoto International Conference Center — the exact same venue at which the Kyoto Protocol was adopted in 1997 during COP3.
