Lord Mayor Ashok Sridharan of Bonn elected as First Vice President of ICLEI

On 18 October 2016, the Global Executive Committee and Council of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability elected Ashok Alexander Sridharan, Lord Mayor of Bonn, Germany as First Vice President. The elections took place against the backdrop of the historic Habitat III conference, where nations will adopt the New Urban Agenda, the global framework that will guide sustainable urbanization in the coming decades.

Mayor Sridharan, a lawyer by profession, was elected as the mayor on 13 September 2015, and become active an active member of the ICLEI Global Executive Committee, replacing his predecessor Mayor Jurgen Nimpsch.

Mayor Sridharan brings 20 years of municipal administrative experience to Bonn and to ICLEI, having worked for the City of Koenigswinter as of 1996. In 2002, he was elected to the Koenigswinter City Council as First Assistant Secretary and Treasurer. By 2010, he was leading many aspects of the Koenigswinter municipal operations as Head of Finance, Schools, Sports, Culture and Town Twinning, and from 2010 to 2015, Mayor Sridharan was Deputy Mayor of Konigswinter and Head of Finance, Human Resources, Organization, IT and Controlling.


As Mayor of Bonn, Sridharan is now leading a hub of international cooperation. Bonn is home to many United Nations agencies, media outlets and private sector entities.

Mayor Sridharan is committed to multistakeholder action towards sustainability. The city offers several programs on renewable energy, which includes an agency offering energy-related advice to homeowners in the city. Bonn is also home to a multistakeholder biodiversity network, among other platforms for collaboration. The mayor recognizes that strong cooperation is essential to building sustainable cities, and will now assume his position as First Vice President of ICLEI, where this principle is fundamental.
