The new Sustainable Cities Platform launched at Habitat III

The new Sustainable Cities Platform, the online hub showcasing transformative actions by cities and civil society was launched today at an official side event on the Basque Declaration at the Habitat III Conference in Quito. The platform was announced in the Basque Declaration, with the aim to provide specific examples of its 15 pathways leading to more inclusive, resilient and productive cities and towns.

The launch of the Sustainable Cities Platform was part of the official side event presenting the Basque Declaration at Habitat III. Ruud Schuthof, Deputy Regional Director of the ICLEI European Secretariat, introduced the Basque Declaration to an audience of over 100 participants. The Basque Declaration builds upon the Aalborg Charter and the Aalborg Commitments, and has been endorsed by over 250 local authorities, organisations and individuals, since its adoption by 800 participants at the 8th European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns in April 2016. The Basque Declaration has a close link with different global frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Climate Agreement and the New Urban Agenda. When unveiling the new platform, Ruud Schuthof showed the first transformative actions that are already available from the website.

Roberto San Salvador, Director of the Cities Lab of the University of Deusto in the Basque Country, shared how his region has progressed towards sustainability and become a leading example in Europe. The Basque Country hosted the 8th European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns in April 2016.

The following panel discussion including also Pekka Sauri, Deputy Mayor of Helsinki, Finland and Oliver Weigel, Head of Division of Urban Development Policy at the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, Germany and Albert Edman, Strategic development officer, City of Umeå, Sweden discussed how the Basque Declaration can help cities to move towards sustainability and support national governments to implement their commitments at global level.
